Coming up the Saturday is the 2015 Northwest Indiana Heart Walk for Porter County. The Heart Walk is championed by the American Heart Association, a nonprofit organization dedicated to building healthier lives which are free of stroke and cardiovascular diseases.
The Heart Walk is quite a large event in NWI. The Porter County walk will take place at Coffee Creek in Chesterton, IN on Saturday September 26, 2015 beginning at 9am. After opening ceremonies, participants can take a 1, 2, or 3 mile route.
People can walk in a team or individuals. Rittenhouse Senior Living of Portage as well as Rittenhouse Senior Living of Valparaiso has a team if you are looking to join a group. Both groups have spots still open and would love for you to walk with them.
“We partnered with the heart walk and wanted to take it one more level,” Judy Kukelka, Marketing and Admissions Director of Rittenhouse Senior Living of Portage said. “Plus, we wanted to do the Heart Walk because it fits closely with our mission. We have residents and staff who have faced heart health issues so this is a near and dear cause for us.”
Rittenhouse is all about supporting local businesses and organizations. The Portage Heart Walk group has been raising money for the cause in the days leading up to the event with bake sales and other community outreach initiatives, and the Valpo Walk group raised funds through various community initiatives including their Easter Bunny Breakfast and Bake Sale. Their relationships with the Northwest Indiana Heart Walk is an excellent example of the positive effects of local organization collaboration.
“[The Heart Walk] provides resources for us and we can support them. We sponsored other events for them as well as the walk,” Kukelka said. “We love to raise money and help local nonprofits.”
