A Purdue University research scientist who developed a film on water with input from collaborators from local cities, water and conservation planners, homeowners and farmers, will screen her project at the Northwest Indiana Earth Day Celebration on April 21, at the Porter County Expo, 215 E. Division Rd., Valparaiso
“Common Ground Common Water – Water Quality: A Shared Priority” by Dr. Sarah Church documents water as a shared resource in Northwest Indiana. The 12-minute film will be shown on the big screen at 9:30 a.m. at the regional event, introducing the public to water quality issues, and demonstrating how each group can contribute to water resource protection.
“This is the public premier of the film,” said Church. “Come see your watershed captured on film, and learn how the Northwest Indiana community is coming together to protect water resources.”
Church will collect feedback on the film, including its role in watershed education and as a motivator for the public to help protect our local waters. She will be available to discuss the film and water quality solutions throughout the Earth Day event. Church will also show the film at her booth #36 and conduct short surveys throughout the day. Participants will receive wildlife native seed mix packets.
Church is a planner and researcher with over 15 years of experience in multiple sectors including non-profit, private, municipal, state government, and university contexts. She has a Masters in Urban Planning at the University of Utah and a PhD in Planning from the University of British Columbia. Her research focuses on human aspects of water resource protection across urban and working landscapes and how to develop programs, plans, and policies that meet ecological goals and contribute to social well-being.
The Northwest Indiana Earth Day Celebration will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 21 and features a family friendly event with 78 exhibitors, live animal shows, music, activities, and more. Admission and parking for the event are free.
