White Sox Make Three Roster Moves

The Chicago White Sox have reinstated left-handed reliever Matt Thornton from the 15-day disabled list, purchased the contract of infielder Brent Morel from Class AAA Charlotte and transferred left-hander Erick Threets to the 60-day disabled list. whitesoxlogo

Thornton, 33, has been on the disabled list since August 25 (retroactive to August 18) with left elbow inflammation. He is 3-4 with a 2.66 ERA (14 ER/47.1 IP) and 66 strikeouts in 50 appearances this season. Thornton leads American League relievers in strikeouts per 9.0 IP (12.17) and is tied for eighth with 20 holds.

Morel, 23, combined to hit .322 (158-490) with 37 doubles, 10 home runs and 64 RBI in 130 games this season between Class AA Birmingham and Charlotte. He began the season at Birmingham, batting .326 (60-184) with two home runs and 30 RBI in 49 games to earn a spot on the Southern League midseason All-Star Team.

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound Morel was promoted to Charlotte on June 1, where he hit .320 (98-306) with 24 doubles, four triples, eight homers and 34 RBI in 81 games. He compiled hitting streaks of 11 games (August 15-27) and 10 games (June 25-July 4) with the Knights.

Morel, who has no major-league experience, entered the 2010 season ranked by Baseball America as the No. 4 Prospect, Best Hitter for Average and Best Infield Arm in the White Sox organization. He will wear uniform No. 22.

Threets, 28, was placed on the 15-day disabled list on August 28 with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow.

With the moves, the White Sox active roster is at 30 players, and the 40-man roster remains at 40.
