Proverbs 21:21 was the message behind New Hope Church’s 2015 Winter Wonderland Gala. Four exceptional people from around the community were chosen by the church to receive honors and recognition for their acts of kindness. They, along with their close friends and family, gathered with the congregation at the Blue Chip Casino in Michigan City on Saturday, December 19th.
The Gala began with a buffet style dinner and dessert. The guests were entertained throughout the meal, first by poetry duo Top Shelf Poetry, then by stand-up comedian B.L.T. in his own way. B.L.T. continued to Emcee the rest of the night.
A video interview of each honoree was played at their turn to accept the award. On film and at the podium they offered words of wisdom and gave thanks to those that supported them.
Pastor Emeritus Ernest Jones was the first man to be honored. He moved from Louisiana to Michigan City in 1975 and has been serving God and his flock ever since.
“Everything that the Lord led me to do,” said Pastor Jones, “Came to fruition without incidence. I did nothing on my own.”
Detective Marty Corley was humbled to receive an award. He sits on the Board of Trustees, is a Chair on the Stepping Stones Shelter’s Committee, and assists in many other organizations throughout the county despite being on the Michigan City police force.
“It’s not just arresting people,” he said of his job, “It’s giving people advice, sending them in the right direction. I hope to be able to lead leaders. One of the best things we can do is provide mentors for the young folk.”
Peggy Thomas, the third Gala Honoree, has always wanted to be in education. As a principal, she gets to impact teachers and children every day. Her advice is to commit your abilities.
“There are no straight lines in life, you zig and zag through it. Just try to do the best that you can do.”
Michigan City native and city Councilman Elect Bryant Dabney was the fourth and final honoree of the night. Throughout his political career, he has helped many people. Those around him describe him as courageous, confident, and successful.
“When you come back to your hometown,” the Notre Dame graduate said, “You have a lot to offer. And they know you, so you have a leg up. I hope, moving forward, that I can really help this city.”
Dabney announced at the Gala that his goal is to be Mayor of Michigan City.
The night wrapped up with door prize drawings, silent auction results, prayer, and dancing. The money raised will go back to helping the community through the New Hope Church. Tina Mahone, the Church’s Chairman of the Building Fund Committee, organized the entire event.
“We want to show the pride we have for certain members of the community because they give of themselves selflessly and without expecting accolade.”
