Collection of stories by IU Northwest alumnus published in new book about steel towns, glimpse into Northwest Indiana

Publisher of Children of Steel to host readings in East Chicago and Whiting May 30, June 1

At first glance, Gloria Ptacek McMillan, Indiana University Northwest Class of 1972, and Bianca Roman, IU Northwest Class of 2024, might not seem to have a lot in common.

But look a little deeper, and you’ll find strong feelings that both alumni have about the region where they grew up: Northwest Indiana.

Their stories, along with tales from additional writers from steel mill towns near and far from Northwest Indiana, have recently been published in a new children’s book, Children of Steel.

The book, released in February 2024, brings together many individual experiences into one collection that puts a positive spotlight on steel towns around the nation, with a significant focus on the region.

McMillan will host two book launches:

  • Thursday, May 30 at 5 p.m.: East Chicago Public Library (2401 E. Columbus Dr., East Chicago, IN)
  • Saturday, June 1 at 2 p.m.: Whiting Public Library (1735 Oliver St., Whiting, IN)
