IU Northwest celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with two events

Event Information

6:04pm - 6:04pm

Indiana University Northwest’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Multicultural Affairs invites all to two special events in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy during one of the most politically divided times in our nation’s history. Both events are free and open to the public.

Putting the civil back into the civil rights fight

Building a "Beloved Community," as Martin Luther King Jr. called it, is a process that goes beyond protest.

During this workshop, part of the Social Justice Conference held during the Indiana University 2021 Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration, participants will learn about a philosophy of radical compassion and results-based activism, and gain helpful tools to have more positive "outcome-based" dialogues across differences.

Speakers:

  • Ron Jones, founder, Dialogues on Diversity
  • James Wallace, director, IU Northwest Office of Diversity, Equity and Multicultural Affairs

This event will take place via Zoom at 1pm on Monday. To register, visit go.iu.edu/3yfi. A link to join the workshop will be provided.

The history of MLK Day at Indiana University

Did you know that an IU Northwest alumnus is responsible for IU’s acknowledgement of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day?

In 1990, Todd Deloney, then-president of the Black Student Union, drew attention to the national holiday by undertaking a high-profile, one-man protest urging campus to close in observance of the holiday … and the rest is history.

Join us for a discussion about the protest and IU’s decision to recognize MLK Day, featuring:

  • Todd Deloney, IU Northwest alumnus
  • Peggy Elliott, IU Northwest chancellor emerita

This event will also take place via Zoom at 1 p.m. on Monday. Participants may join using this link: us02web.zoom.us/j/88057337876
