NICA Client Story: Tom’s Journey to Hope and Community

Before finding refuge in our housing program, Tom lived in a small, mold-infested apartment, battling isolation and depression. Hindered by vision issues and lacking transportation, everyday tasks like grocery shopping and doctor visits became daunting. Despite his efforts to secure assistance, he faced rejection due to his status as a single man.

The turning point came when Tom applied for housing at Northwest Indiana Community Action. His warm reception at our Valparaiso office ignited a spark of hope within him. He dared to dream of a safe, clean home near essential amenities and friends.

Upon moving in, Tom was pleasantly surprised by the warmth and respect shown by our staff. Attending resident events, he discovered a sense of belonging that had been absent from his life for years. Our community became his community, a place where he was accepted and valued.

Our program exceeded Tom's expectations in numerous ways. Access to the community workout room not only helped him shed weight and manage his diabetes but also boosted his confidence and self-esteem. Engaging in resident council meetings empowered him to voice his opinions and ideas, fostering a sense of empowerment and belonging. Free cooking and financial management workshops enriched his skills and outlook on life, inspiring him to take control of his health and finances. Voluntary Bible studies nurtured his spiritual growth, providing him with a sense of peace and purpose.

Tom singles out Cathy Thompson, his resident services coordinator, for her exceptional support. With her guidance and the resources provided by our program, Tom's life has undergone a remarkable transformation.

Today, Tom thrives in his new surroundings. From living in unacceptable conditions, he now calls a brand-new apartment home. Social isolation has been replaced by a vibrant community, where he actively participates in events and volunteers his time to help others. His future shines bright with opportunities for friendship, volunteering, and continued involvement in our Resident Council.

Tom's journey is a testament to the life-changing impact of our program, and Tom stands as a beacon of hope for us all.
