Valparaiso University unveils new marquee sign on corner of 30 and Sturdy

Valparaiso University (VU) has long been a beacon in the Valparaiso community. From educational opportunities to events for the whole family, VU always has a lot happening on campus. To keep the community informed, VU unveiled a brand new marquee on July 1 in a small ceremony alongside project donors from the Vinay and Suman Das Foundation. The sign sits on the corner of US-30 and Sturdy Road, front and center for all traveling by.

“This sign has been in the works for over a good year,” VU President José Padilla said. “The Vinay and Suman Das Foundation provided us with the money, but it still took a while to plan it and get the city’s approval. Despite that, everyone involved was persistent and kept the project moving.”

The sign, created and installed by Steindler Signs & Graphix, was the idea of Padilla’s wife, Hilda. She believed it was important to get VU’s events out to the public in a way that was highly visible while honoring the roots VU has in Valparaiso. Donor Suman Das agreed and was happy to help fund the project.

“The Vinay and Suman Das Foundation donated to support the construction of this monument sign because it represents the enduring legacy and excellence of our university,” Das said. “This sign will not only serve as a symbol of pride for current and future students but also as a beacon for the community, celebrating the rich history and bright future of this institution.”

The sign will be used to display important information and events happening at VU. It provides another mode of communication between the university and the community it serves. Many at the university expect the sign to stand as a symbol of VU’s commitment to Valparaiso for years to come.

“Today, we celebrate more than just a marquee sign; we celebrate a beacon of connection and community,” Assistant Vice President of External Relations Kelly Anthony said. “Thanks to the generous gift from the Vinay and Suman Das Foundation, our new Valparaiso University Marquee Sign stands as a testament to our commitment to openness and engagement. It will serve as a bridge, connecting our vibrant community to the exciting happenings and achievements on campus."

With representatives from VU and the Vinay and Suman Das Foundation present, the sign was turned on for the first time, thanking the Foundation for making the project possible in VU’s characteristic gold and brown.

“This location is just perfect for letting the world know this is what's going on here on campus,” Padilla said. “We talk a lot about being Beacons, and look at those colors. With this, we’re a beacon for the community and everybody else who passes by this sign.”
