Porter-Starke Services Foundation’s Living Health, Balance, & Hope Symposium brings resilience strategies to the Region

Life is a journey of continual growth, but there are always obstacles and adversity to overcome. Having the right tools to face these challenges is the key to having a healthy, successful life, which is why the Porter-Starke Services Foundation is excited to host its annual Living Health, Balance, & Hope Symposium.

This year’s symposium is focused on The Science of Resilience & Optimism. The goal behind this year’s symposium is simple: learn strategies to increase resilience and develop an optimistic mindset. The symposium will take place on July 12 at Valparaiso University’s Harre Union.

The day begins at 8 a.m. with a Keynote Breakfast that gradually introduces key concepts that will be important in the multiple workshop sessions throughout the day. These include defining resilience, discussing the role optimism plays in handling setbacks, and introducing six core strategies to building an optimistic mindset in a therapeutic setting.

Following breakfast, three workshop sessions will be held between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. These sessions will be led by two of the Psychology Center at the University of Pennsylvania’s leading experts: Karen Reivich, Ph.D. and Judy Saltzberg, Ph.D. Both Reivich and Saltzberg are internationally recognized experts in the study of resilience and its benefits.

The first session begins at 10 a.m. and outlines common thinking traps that undermine attempts to remain resilient in times of trouble.

The second session will teach participants four practical strategies for overcoming mental chatter. These strategies are widely applicable and can work on an individual or group level.

The final session wraps the day up with strategies for enjoying the joy and building trust when sharing positive thoughts and experiences.

Tickets are on sale now and there is still time to register through June 30 for the keynote breakfast, partial day, and full-day. Attendees of the full-day symposium can earn up to 6 continuing education units (CEUs).
