After a year of working on requirements, Junior Girl Scout Troop 30091 from Flint Lake Elementary School in Valparaiso has earned their Bronze Award. This award requires the girls to learn about their community and choose a service project that will give them experience in serving people.
Troop 30091 chose The Caring Place, a shelter for victims of domestic violence. The girls made scarves and hats for the clients, spoke with managers about their work, and visited the administrative offices. One of the main focuses of Girl Scouting is to help the girls develop a strong sense of service to carry over into their adult years.
The Caring Place is a non-profit social service organization, serving the needs of domestic violence and sexual assault victims. In addition to safe shelter, The Caring Place provides community education, support groups, legal counseling, case management, and independent living planning.
