South Shore Foot & Ankle: Saving one foot at a time

Since 2012, the team at South Shore Foot & Ankle has been helping the Region, one foot at a time. In a new location off Eastport Center Drive, this state-of-the-art facility was founded on one doctor’s passion to provide a stellar experience for patients.

“One thing I think separates us from other practices is the extensive training and credentialing required at the highest level to be Board Certified,” said Dr. Cynthia Grundy, DPM, FACFAS. “Our patients are getting the best quality of care because both physicians have achieved the board certification in their specialty.”

Dr. Dominik Meyer, DPM, FACFAS, also board certified, joins Dr. Grundy to round out South Shore Foot & Ankle, making their practice a one-stop-shop for foot care. Best of all, the team at South Shore Foot & Ankle is able to accommodate appointments within a day of calling, whereas people tend to wait several weeks. This allows the patient to be evaluated sooner and the recovery time is diminished.

There are many causes of foot, ankle and heel pain. Dr. Grundy recommends scheduling an appointment if you have had pain more than 2-3 days.

“I tell people that, for the most part, foot pain will only get worse and/or cause other problems in or around the location where the pain is coming from. If your foot pain lasts more than three days you should definitely call the office for an appointment to be evaluated,” Grundy said. “The sooner you identify the proper diagnosis, the faster it is to recover, and the shorter that process is.”

The South Shore Foot & Ankle team strives to meet every patient’s goals and get them functioning properly and pain-free as soon as possible. They use top-of-the-line technology for easy and mess free orthotic impressions and offer minimally invasive surgical procedures as well as cellular tissue injections to improve healing. Here are some of the more common ones.

Sport Injuries

South Shore Foot & Ankle specialists realize the importance of sports and exercise, and work quickly to get you back to your chosen activity. When participating in sports, your foot and ankle bears all your body weight.

“We have seen an increase in teenage athletes who are experiencing muscular and skeletal issues. Athletes tend to be in the same sport year round now,” Grundy said. “Previously young athletes alternated sports quarterly - using different muscle groups for each different sport. With year-round sport activities- athletes are prone to injuries caused by overuse and repetition. South Shore Foot and Ankle can evaluate these athletes and develop treatment plans to prevent injuries.”

Custom Orthotics

Custom orthotics are specially-made devices designed to support feet, and are crafted specifically for an individual foot. Doctors match the contours of feet precisely and then measure a design for the way it moves.

“Our custom orthotics are made utlizing computer technology. We can actually take an impression of your foot on a gait plate. We’re able to see how your foot functions while you’re walking, versus a cast where you’re laying on a table and it’s basically a static impression,” Grundy said.

Diabetic Foot Care & Wound Care

Foot problems can pose a risk to anyone, but people with diabetes should monitor their feet because they are more susceptible to major complications.

Diabetes and wounds can be a frightening combination. Some patients with diabetes develop foot ulcers and are at risk for amputation. A foot ulcer is prone to infection, which may become severe. Having your feet regularly examined and treated is very important to prevent infection and possible gangrene.

“Our diabetic patients are seen regularly as part of diabetic foot program. Early recognition of potential problems or wounds is key to treatment. New technology is utilized to improve wound healing including cellular tissue grafting performed in the office setting.” Grundy said. “We are able to provide diabetic shoe gear and customized insoles, typically covered by insurance, to improve function and prevent injury. South Shore Foot and Ankle is your foot and ankle specialist.”
