Cornhole For a Cause

The American Cancer Society and Indiana 105.5 are ready to celebrate, remember, and fight back against cancer. Throughout the year, local Relay For Life teams have been raising funds to help in the fight against cancer. On Saturday, August 1, from 4 – 10 p.m., Indiana 105.5 will help in the fight against cancer by hosting the first annual Cornhole tournament at the Porter County Fair, with proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society Relay For Life.

“We’re excited to partner with Indiana 105.5; Radio One has always been a great supporter of the American Cancer Society. The money raised will help the American Cancer Society create more birthdays by helping people get well, stay well, and by finding cures and fighting back against cancer,” said Suzanne Tracy, Director, American Cancer Society, Northwest Indiana Area Service Center.

Residents throughout northwest Indiana can participate in the Cornhole tournament where the top 10 winners will receive a complete Cornhole game, and the overall winning team will receive a grand prize that will be announced on Indiana 105.5 and at www.Indiana105.com. Teams of two can register for the tournament for $20 per team, with the proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society Relay For Life to fight cancer. A team can consist of family, friends, colleagues, co-workers or anyone who wishes to participate. Registration is available online at www.indiana105.com or at the Radio One Communications corporate office in Valparaiso, 2755 Sager Road, or the Lake County Office, 8105 Georgia Street, Merrillville, prior to the event. The tournament will begin at 4 p.m. in the Radio One Communications tent at the Porter County Fair and run until 10 p.m. or when a winner is declared.

“We where looking for an event the whole family could participate in, co-workers could challenge each other, businesses challenge businesses and government offices the same,” said Leigh Ellis President of Radio One Communications, “and what a better way to do it; friendly, safe entertainment everyone can be part of and all at the Porter County Fair. I’m glad we can partner with the American Cancer Society and the Porter County Fair, which both will benefit from this tournament.”

“Radio One Communications has worked with the American Cancer Society on a number of promotions and we are extremely excited about this partnership since it is an event where everyone in the family can participate,” said Don Clark, the Director of Programming for Radio One Communications.

As the Society’s signature event, Relay For Life celebrates 25 years of bringing cancer survivors and anyone touched by the disease together. Held overnight in honor of the fact that cancer never sleeps, Relay For Life has grown from a single event in Tacoma, Wash. that raised $27,000 to the largest grassroots movement nationwide. More than 5,000 communities throughout the U.S. now host an American Cancer Society Relay For Life event and have raised more than $3 billion for the fight against cancer.

About The American Cancer Society
The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. As the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing more than $3.4 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, more than 11 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year.
